Dr. Thompson was
born on January 9, 1968, in Birmingham, Alabama, and was raised in
Brewton, Alabama where he graduated from T.R. Miller High School. He attended Auburn University
where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. From Auburn he moved to Mobile and
received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama. During medical school he was
active in the medical school student assembly and was elected into the
Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of
Virginia where he received the University of Virginia School of Medicine
Award for Excellence in Teaching. In addition to his residency, he
completed additional surgical oncology training with an emphasis on hepatobiliary and
pancreatic surgery. He was
active in melanoma vaccine research, and has multiple publications on the
subject. Dr. Thompson held a
faculty position in the Department of Surgery at the University of
Virginia prior to joining Cancer Surgery of Mobile, P.C. in 2002. In addition to working at the
Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, Providence Hospital, and Springhill
Memorial Hospital, he also holds a faculty position in the Department of
Surgery at the University of South Alabama.
Dr. Thompson’s broad
interest in surgical oncology includes cancer of the liver, pancreas,
stomach, colon, rectum, skin, endocrine, and soft tissues. Special clinical interests include multimodality management of
malignant and benign liver and pancreatic diseases, melanoma, soft tissue
sarcoma, endocrine tumors, upper GI malignancies, and laparoscopic management
of abdominal malignancies.
Dr.
Thompson has been married to his wife, Libby, since 1989. They have three sons. They are members of Ashland Place
United Methodist Church in Mobile. He and his family enjoy many outdoor activities including water
sports, fishing, and hunting.
